Nicaragua Day Nine-Selva Negra

Selva Negra was a wonderful place and I had my own little casita that had  plants growing on the roof as many of the structures there did.Birding was fantastic around the casita’s and on the many trails that wound through the forest around the lodge .

The Pale-billed Woodpecker left Connie a little gift as it flew overhead. Her look says she doesn’t particularly appreciate it!

One of the most exciting parts  of the trip came when a few of us did a little bird watching before breakfast and heard the distinctive call of the Three-wattled Bellbird (go to this link to hear it: ). We started after it and followed it a ways before we realized we were going to have to go off trail to find it. We did just that. This bird is very wary and kept taking off and relocating before we could visually find it. The foliage was very thick and we had to move as near to silence as possible. We eventually found it but only a couple of us got to see it which was disappointing. The good news is that after breakfast on our morning hike we were able to relocate it and get a scope on it so everyone could see it. I was able to get some halfway decent pictures of it.
